“Every passport stamp tells a story of courage, growth, and the power of global connection.” -Fernando Pensamiento

Hi, I’m Fernando, a passionate traveler, UCLA student, and Gilman Scholar who believes in the power of global education and cultural exchange. As a Geography/GIS major at UCLA, I’ve always been fascinated by the way places, people, and environments connect—and my love for travel has only deepened that curiosity.

Thanks to the Gilman Scholarship, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, where I immersed myself in the local culture, explored breathtaking landscapes, and gained invaluable insights into global perspectives. The scholarship also gave me the opportunity to complete a global internship with a nonprofit organization in Bali, where I applied my GIS skills to help map marine protected areas. This hands-on experience allowed me to contribute to important conservation efforts while expanding my professional skills in an international work environment.

This journey reinforced my commitment to international learning and inspired me to help other students pursue study abroad opportunities, gain global work experience, and apply for the Gilman Scholarship. I want to encourage more students to step out of their comfort zones, experience new cultures, and expand their horizons through travel and education. Studying and interning abroad can be life-changing, and I hope to guide and inspire others to take advantage of these amazing opportunities.

Let’s connect and explore the world together!
